National Pancake Day Fun!

P is for Purple and Pink Pancakes Pecan Pancakes!

My kids just absolutely LOVE pancakes. We have them admittedly way to often but oh well they eat enough of the other veggies and fruits. Plus there are worst things they could consume.

I take this basic family sized recipe and make a bunch of variations with it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 1/2 tbls baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbls sugar
  • 6 tbls melted butter
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 3 cups flour

Directions:

In a larger bowl I’ll add the eggs, baking power, sea salt, sugar (extracts if adding any at this point) and whisk it all very well till it’s a pail color and nicely foamed up, Then I add the flour, milk, and melted butter in and whisk that till almost all the lumps are out.

When cooking I’ll add extra melted butter in the pan so I can use that to spread over my griddle vs using spray.

Just remember to wait till you see the bubbles and they start to pop before your flip. I like a lower middle range of heat.

We love to use food paste (since I make a lot of cakes I have the Wilton brand on hand all the time) to make them fun colors sometimes. I’ve made chocolate chip, banana (I love post my healthy recipe on GF another time), pecan, snicker-doodle, cinnamon bun swirl, and my favorite pumpkin, and pumpkin with chocolate chips. (For the pumpkin I only add 2 cups of milk though).

Whatever you do just remember to include your little ones. They love to cook and there really isn’t any reason not to let them join in the fun. It’s a great lesson for life and if it gives them the spark to learn how to cook your son or daughter in law will thank you.

Since it was National Pancake day I turned that into our lesson for the day and whipped up these lesson sheets. All three of the older ones got to do a writing and color worksheet, and a build your own pancake craft. Then the oldest had an extra writing sheet with P, p, pancake. When they finished that I read them this educational kids book I found on Amazon.

Don’t be afraid to make a worksheet or craft up yourself. The ones you buy or print off were made by someone so why not it be you.

There are a few interesting facts about pancakes I thought I’d share to go along with this lesson.

  • it’s a 30,000 year old recipe
  • it go insides with Lent and is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday
  • American is made of flour, wheat flour is Crepe, and buckwheat are Gallette
  • you can find a variation of pancakes all over the world
  • IHOP has been giving a free short stack on this day since 2006 and have raised almost $30 million for different charities

Till the Enjoy and God Bless,
